Woven was commissioned by Michael Pratt in 2017. It was requested that I use caxixi in the piece along with drums and audio playback. Caxixi are shakers consisting of a woven basket with a flat-bottom made from dried gourd or coconut shell. The title was inspired by the basket-weave of the caxixi, but it also refers to the manner in which the audio playback and the performer’s part are woven together. A middle section of the piece requires the performer to play the drums and the caxixi simultaneously, weaving the two percussion techniques together.
