Did you ever ask a question as a child, and “you’ll understand when you’re older” was the response? Then, when you were older did you still not understand? Or maybe you realized that the adult you asked did not know how to answer your question. This piece of music is a representation of that experience. The opening section represents the child’s innocent yet tough-to-answer question, along with a motive containing 3 ascending notes (sol-la-do). These bits of music are transformed and developed to sound darker and a bit aged as the piece goes on. The final section arrives back in the same key and tone as the beginning, showing that the child’s question is never fully answered when they’re older.
