When I write music, I often try to portray the world around me. Experiences become pieces of music, and my observations of nature, culture, and life become musical metaphors. The three movements of Via each contain music that was created using a metaphor. Music via ‘Theft’, music via ‘Breaths and Echoes’, and music via ‘Narrative’.
I. Theft– I combined ideas (not direct quotes) from many of my musical influences to create this movement of music. Some of the artists who directly influenced portions of the piece are Claude Debussy, Bill Evans, and the rock band Kiev.
II. Breaths and Echoes– This movement contains melodies that grow one note at a time (inhale), then retract one note at a time (exhale). These melodies are passed from one player to the other in an echo-like fashion, and in certain portions of the movement singular notes from the melodies are highlighted by the other player to create an echo of those particular notes.
III. Narrative– The closing movement is like a story told in music. This is not a programmatic piece where there is a specific story being portrayed, but rather the elements of a narrative are used to create a final movement to the work.
