Eighty Six
(6') – Flute Choir As I set off writing Eighty Six, the sweeping opening figure was what came first. From this figure, I pulled out a contrasting lyrical melody which became the focus for all of the 'jazzy' sounding sections. The piece oscillates back and forth between distant soundscapes of repetitive figures and inviting tunes that seem to emerge from those soundscapes. |

Partita
(14') – 2 Flt, Gtr, Vcl Partita is a set of three movements inspired by traditional Baroque dance suite movements. While the piece does make use of notable features of these Baroque movements, more importantly the formal structure of a traditional partita is used as a vehicle to express musical ideas in a clear and refined manner. |

Bound
(5') – Flute/Clarinet The title of this work came from the motor rhythm at the beginning of the piece that 'bounds' forward throughout. The majority of this music came from a piano improvisation of mine that contained some small imperfections. I decided to transcribe this improvisation, blemishes included, and make it the backbone of the piece. By doing so I was 'bound' to this transcription and composed around the aimlessly floating melodies and blemishes to create the end product. |
